Five and a Half Years Later, Valheim Reaches 1.0
On September 9, 2026, Iron Gate released version 1.0 of Valheim, five years and seven months after it entered Early Access in February 2021. The update lands on PC, Linux and Mac, on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and for the first time on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with full crossplay across every platform. The game sells for $29.99, and Early Access owners receive 1.0 at no cost.
At the heart of this version is the Deep North, the game's final biome, the one the community had been waiting for since launch. Iron Gate ships it with an unprecedented volume of content, over 40 weapons, 4 armour sets, over 10 creatures, over 80 build pieces, over 30 materials, over 20 dishes, and an achievement system with more than 50 entries.
This article details what players will find in the far north, then what 1.0 concretely changes for a dedicated server, new save format, Steam IDs, mods and crossplay. Everything relies on Iron Gate's official changelog and communications.
The Deep North, Valheim's Final Biome
The Deep North is a biome of deep snow. You literally have to clear it before you can build, and a snow shovel arrives for exactly that. Seas and ponds are frozen there, and the ice does not always hold a viking's weight.
The biome tells a story, that of the Jotun invasion. The giants have begun their march on Valheim, and two world events carry that threat, "The Jotun have found you" and "They emerge from below…". On site, you discover abandoned villages, stave halls, ice ponds, memorial sites, and two new dungeons, the Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla.
Northern lights dominate the night sky, and the new music was composed for the biome and its tunnels.
The Creatures and the Boss
The northern bestiary counts around fifteen newcomers.
| Category | Names |
|---|---|
| Enemies | Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen, Writhan |
| Pulp | Hexahedric Pulp, Shapeless Pulp, Tiny Pulp |
| Animals | Moose and Moose Calf, Seal and Baby Seal |
| Boss | Kall Fimbulbringer |
The Moose is the most anticipated addition on the wildlife side, it can be tamed and ridden with a dedicated Moose Saddle. Its hide, meat and sinew feed a good part of the biome's crafting.
At the end of the road waits Kall Fimbulbringer, the Deep North boss and Valheim's last.
The New Mechanics
- The grappling hook, a tool that finally lets you cross heights without scaffolding.
- Alternate biomes, at the edges of the world, different versions of the early biomes await explorers.
- The Forge of Potential, sixteen protection and battle idols are scattered across the world, to be brought to this hidden forge for a chance to upgrade gear beyond its limits.
- Upgradeable pockets, Haldor now sells the Deeper Pockets and Wider Pockets upgrades.
- Cinematics, new sequences unlock as you progress.
- Achievements, over 50 at launch. Beware, most dev commands permanently block them for the character and world concerned, with a confirmation before entering cheat mode.
- Two placeable boulders with the hoe, a buildable ice block, and the snowball.
Crafting, Weapons and Armour
The Deep North introduces three weapon tiers, Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood, each in twelve types, sword, greatsword, atgeir, mace, sledge, axe, greataxe, spear, dagger, knucklechains, bow and crossbow. Four mage staves round out the arsenal, Echo Spike, Spirit Caller, Northern Vengeance and Lightning Strike, along with four shields, including the Shield of Roots.
| Type | Content |
|---|---|
| Armour sets | Protector, Vanguard, Caller, Lox Fur |
| Capes | Moose Hide Cape, Cape of the Caller |
| Trinkets | Neckstabber, Witch Crown |
| Ammunition | Bloodgold arrows, bolts, missiles and payloads |
| Bomb | Ember Charge |
| Crown | Crown of Valheim |
On the materials side, note Bloodgold, Frostcore, Frostfire and Thunderblood essences, Timberwood (which can be planted), moose hide, seal blubber and Nornathread. Two production stations arrive, the Frigid Kiln and the Frost Foundry, with three extensions for existing workshops, Smith's Aprons for the Black Forge, Smoker for the cauldron and Standing Loom for the Galdr Table.
Building and Cooking
Builders receive over 80 pieces. 67-degree walls and roofs arrive for wood, Ashwood, shingles and thatch, alongside 10 Timber poles and beams, 5 decorated beams and 15 Scalewood walls. Three drawbridges, Drawbridge, Rustic Drawbridge and Timber Drawbridge, a stone fence, gates, and above all furniture, Antler Throne, carved tables and benches, wardrobe, moose hide and sealskin rugs, Grausten chest. Decorative metal stacks, the Eternal Pyre and two lanterns complete the set.
In the kitchen, three new crops, kale, oats and poteitr, feed over 20 recipes, from pancakes to oatmeal, from seal soup to Pulled Bear, up to the Northern Morning Fare feast. Lingonberries and their juice join the wild resources.
Beyond the Deep North
1.0 touches the whole game.
- New Draw Distance setting, to shorten or lengthen the simulation distance, for performance or spectacle.
- New save system, world data is split across chunks, which reduces what is written on each save and holds up better against a mid-write failure.
- Reworked movement animations, Magica Cloth physics for capes, Unity engine upgrade, much faster world generation, optimised audio and texture memory.
- Balance, Bjorn rarer and weaker in the Black Forest, increased durability for Mistlands and Ashlands gear, reduced spawns in the Ashlands, increased mist removal range for every Mistlands weapon.
- Comfort, every hairstyle and beard available from character creation, build piece author window in the HUD, controller vibration, Ukrainian added to the languages.
The Patches Since Release
Iron Gate has kept the fixes coming. Note that each patch takes a few days to reach every platform, but crossplay keeps working across versions.

| 1.0.15 | September 18 | Terrain duplication hurting performance, armour mould drop rates |
| 1.0.16 | September 25 | Deep North terrain reverting, excessive spawns during raids, tessellation off in the low preset |
| 1.0.17 | October 6 | Rare bug that could erase every object in part of the world when a large save chunk was split |

What Changes for Your Server
1. The Save Format Changes, Back Up First
The world is no longer written in one block, it is split into chunks. It is faster and more robust, but it is a format change, with the risks that implies. Case in point, a rare bug in chunk splitting could erase every object in an area, only fixed in 1.0.17. Make a full backup from the panel before updating, and make sure you are on 1.0.17 at least, ideally 1.0.20 which also fixes needless CPU use on the dedicated server.
2. Existing Worlds Stay Playable, but Not Identical
According to the official FAQ, an existing world receives the new content, but the Deep North only generates in areas not yet explored. If your players have already travelled the far north of the map, they will need to go further, or start a fresh world. Iron Gate clearly recommends a new playthrough to enjoy 1.0.
3. Steam IDs Changed Format
1.0 introduces a new ID format with the V_ prefix, where older ones started with Steam_. Hotfix 1.0.12 had to fix ban and whitelist entries that no longer recognised the old format. After updating, check your adminlist, permittedlist and bannedlist files. Our guides How to Add an Admin to a Valheim Server and How to Enable the Whitelist on a Valheim Server cover these files.
4. Mods Are Not Guaranteed
Iron Gate says it plainly, there is no official mod support and they may not work at launch, until their authors adapt. If your server runs BepInEx and plugins, check each one's compatibility with 1.0 before updating, or disable them while you test. Our guides How to Install and Enable BepInEx on a Valheim Server and How to Install a BepInEx Mod on a Valheim Server remain the reference for the procedure. One more consequence, mods and dev commands block achievements, and a command lets you re-enable them.
5. Full Crossplay, Same Server Size
Crossplay works across every platform, PS5 and Switch 2 included, and it keeps working even when a patch has not yet reached every platform. Server capacity does not change, 1 to 10 players. Two network fixes are worth knowing, 1.0.14 disabled a biome cache that could prevent joining a remote server, and 1.0 fixes several IPv6 bugs while optimising terrain modification traffic.
What to Do
- Warn your players, reminding them of Iron Gate's recommendation to start a fresh world.
- Create a full backup from the Backups tab of your panel, and download it.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Update, then restart while watching the console during world conversion.
- Check the admin, whitelist and ban lists.
- Test your mods one at a time, or leave them disabled until their authors release 1.0 versions.
- Test a connection from an updated client. Our guide How to Join Your Valheim Server covers the three methods.
For large files, SFTP remains better suited than the panel file manager, our guide How to Connect to Your Gaming Server via SFTP walks through it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Early Access world compatible with 1.0?
Yes, it stays playable where you left it and receives the new content. The Deep North, however, only appears in areas still unexplored.
Why did my admins lose their rights?
The Steam ID format changed with 1.0. Check your lists and make sure the server is on 1.0.12 at least, which restored compatibility with the old IDs.
Will my BepInEx mods work?
Not necessarily. There is no official support, each mod must be updated by its author. Test them one at a time on a copy of the world.
Can PS5 or Switch 2 players join my server?
Yes, crossplay is full across every platform.
How many players does a server accept?
1 to 10, as before 1.0.
