How to Add an Admin to a Valheim Server

To maintain an optimal gaming experience on your Valheim server, it is often necessary to delegate administrator rights to trusted players. These rights allow them to use moderation commands (kick/ban), access debug mode, and perform general maintenance. This guide explains how to safely configure these access rights on your Winheberg panel.

Prerequisites

• An active Valheim server on your Winheberg panel
• The player must have logged into the server at least once to capture their unique identifier.

Step 1: Retrieve the Player's SteamID64

To grant rights, you need the SteamID64, a unique 17-digit identifier.

Method A: Via the Panel Console (Fastest)

1. Ask the player to briefly connect to your Valheim server.
2. Go to your Winheberg panel and open the Console tab.
3. Observe the logs during connection. You will see a line indicating: ... received local Platform ID Steam_76561198796411813
4. Copy the associated 17-digit number (the SteamID64).

Method B: Via External Tool (If player is offline)

1. Ask the player for their Steam profile URL.
2. Use a tool like SteamID.io to convert their profile into a SteamID64 (17 digits).

Step 2: Add the Administrator to adminlist.txt

Attention: To prevent data corruption or your changes being overwritten, you must stop your server before modifying any files.

1. Stop your server from the panel dashboard.
2. Once stopped, open the File Manager tab.
3. Navigate to the config folder: .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/.
4. Open the adminlist.txt file.
5. Add the player's SteamID64 on a new line.
6. Save the file.

Step 3: Apply Changes

1. Restart your server from the panel dashboard.
2. Once in-game, the player will be able to use administrator commands (such as /kick, /ban, or debug commands).

Troubleshooting

❌ The player does not have admin rights

• Verify SteamID: Ensure you copied only the 17-digit number (without the "Steam_" prefix).
• Restart: Verify that you have restarted the server after the modification.
• File Format: Ensure there are no empty lines or spaces before/after the SteamID in the file.

❌ Changes keep disappearing

• Stop the server: If you edit the file while the server is running, the server might overwrite your changes. Always stop the server before editing adminlist.txt.

Best Practices

• Limit access: Only add trusted individuals as administrators.
• Back up: Before modifying your configuration files, always perform a Backup from your panel.
• Security: Never share your Winheberg panel access, even with your in-game administrators.
